Islamic School seniors deliver $16,500 for cancer research

On Friday 23 May 2025, senior learners from Greenacre Secondary at Malek Fahd Islamic School visited Chris O’Brien Lifehouse to present a novelty cheque for $16,500. This generous amount was raised during the school’s Breast Cancer Fundraiser Dinner earlier this year.

This visit was a powerful example of Khidma – ﺧِﺪﻣَﺔ (service) in action and a reflection of the School’s Service Learning framework, which encourages learners to take initiative, serve others, and connect their classroom learning to real-world outcomes.

The funds donated will directly support life-saving cancer research and patient care. Alhamdulillah, it was a proud and emotional moment for the learners as they saw the impact of their efforts and their role in contributing to the wellbeing of others.

During the visit, learners toured the biomedical research laboratories and met with Professor Jeremy Crook, a molecular biologist pioneering work in tissue engineering and tumour modelling. His research aims to personalise cancer treatments and develop new therapeutic approaches.

They also explored the Radiation Oncology department, guided by May Whitaker, Head of Physics and Engineering. She introduced them to advanced treatment tools including the CT simulator, radiation planning room, and the Linear Accelerator, which delivers high-precision radiation therapy to cancer patients.

Their actions beautifully reflect the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (s) who said:

“The most beloved of people to Allah is the one who brings the most benefit to others.”
«أَحَبُّ النَّاسِ إِلَى اللهِ أَنْفَعُهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ»
(Hadith: al-Muʻjam al-Awsaṭ 5787)

Congratulations to our senior learners on their outstanding effort and sincere commitment to community service. Your actions are a shining example of youth leadership grounded in Islamic values.
